One of Europe's favourite music festivals, Roskilde returns to Denmark this year for the 37th time since two high school students set it up way back in 1971. Originally meant for hippies, these days you'll find a more mainstream crowd and with over 100,000 taking part in the festival in 2006, expect big things.

With over 6 stages in the festival arena, you're bound to find something you like. Genres range from rock, hi-hop, metal, urban electronica, and 3rd world contemporary music (among others) and you might also find a bit of opera thrown in here and there. Previous acts have included Bob Marley, The Kinks, U2, Eric Clapton, Metallica, Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan, The Cure, Iron Maiden, Nirvana, Aerosmith, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Sex Pistols, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Bjork, and loads more. Recent years have seen The Who, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Muse, Queens of the Stone Age, Bjork, and Arctic Monkeys (among others) hit Roskilde.

Roskilde is a pretty safe bet, especially if you're going on your first European music festival. There will probably be a pretty large British contingent going this year (going by previous years) so there'll definitely be some English speakers around. Check out the official website for more information... but before you do that check out the links on the left for more info on the festival.
